What if students are required to master a competency before proceeding to the next one? What if students can demonstrate if they have successfully achieved the desired learning outcome at their own pace? And what if these competencies are frequently assessed to assure mastery? What do you think of this approach? Do you think students will thrive and show better outcome?
This approach is known as the Competency-Based Learning. Similar to the outcomes-based learning but instead of evaluating their output, their mastery of a competency is assessed. And what makes it easier for the learners is they can do this at their own pace. They can even repeatedly master a skill before proceeding to the next one. And these competencies are laid out to them before the start of a semester or a course.
Competency-based learning also provides a differentiated support based on the individuals needs of the students. This way, students are more receptive on the feedback they receive since it is tailored to their needs. It provides both encouragement and assurance of their learning process.
